LOSELING SCHOOLDrepung Loseling School was established in 1980 with the aim of teaching the young monks not only the scriptures but also with modern subjects needed for today’s world.
The very beginning of this school helped educate a lot of younger monks who encouraged our senior monks to establish a standard school. However, it took many years before this request could be fulfilled. On 14th of January 1995, a new school was inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This school building is still in heavy use today. NUMBER OF STUDENTSToday there are 285 student monks grading from class level 1 to 10. The monks are not only from the surrounding areas, many are from Himalayan regions like Ladakh, Kinnur, Spiti and Tawang as well as students from Tibet, Bhutan and the Tibetan communities located in different parts of India. SCHOOL TIMINGSThe School starts at 8: am with National Anthems of India and Tibet after which two students give their morning speech at the assembly. The students march to their respective classrooms and the day’s chasses start soon thereafter. There are eight classes per day with 35-40 minutes periods. Morning session ends at 11: 00 am and the students are served lunch at 11:30 am. Afternoon classes resume at 12:20 pm and conclude at 3: 15 pm. There are also Self-study sessions between 7 and 9 pm. After these, the junior students return to their rooms while the senior students, studying in class VI to X, join the monastic debates held at Loseling debate courtyard. The debates go until 11: 00 pm where the monks practice their skills of inquiry and deepen their philosophical understandings.
TEACHING AND OTHER STAFFSCurrently there are twenty-two staff members; including the Principal, teachers, a clerk, a Librarian, disciplinarian and a watchman, of the twenty-two staff, sixteen are monks. SUBJECTS AND EXAMINATIONSThe subject differs from one class another. The six common subjects taught in class I-V are Tibetan, English, Science, Social Studies, Scriptural Memorization and Mathematics. Class I to IV have also traditional Tibetan calligraphy period, during which the students write with a bamboo pencil on wooden slate covered by white powder. However, the English handwriting for class I & II write on notebooks with ink pens.
Primary students have 3-unit tests, 1 half yearly test and an annual test in December. Class V students have to appear in common Examination conducted by the CBSE at CST camp # 3 Class VI to X must come under Examination Board of Drepung Loseling and so Philosophy is taught as the mainsubject. They learn Debate, Tibetan poetry, English, and Scripture memorization. These students take Examinations at both the Loseling School and Drepung Loseling Monastery. The school examination includes 4 unit tests, one half yearly exams and as annual examination in April. HOLIDAYS.Monday is the weekly holiday and the School celebrates National holidays of India and Tibet. The students have winter break in December for 20 days and 50 days for summer vacation from May to June. The new academic session starts from mid June. |
